The Super-Slim New Laptop

Prototype Nokia Phone Recharges Without Wires


Pardon the cliche, but it’s one of the holiest of Holy Grails of technology: Wireless power. And while early lab experiments have been able to “beam” electricity a few feet to power a light bulb, the day when our laptops and cell phones can charge without having to plug them in to a wall socket still seems decades in the future.

Nokia, however, has taken another baby step in that direction with the invention of a cell phone that recharges itself using a unique system: It harvests ambient radio waves from the air, and turns that energy into usable power. Enough, at least, to keep a cell phone from running out of juice.

While “traditional” (if there is such a thing) wireless power systems are specifically designed with a transmitter and receiver in mind, Nokia’s system isn’t finicky about where it gets its wireless waves. TV, radio, other mobile phone systems — all of this stuff just bounces around the air and most of it is wasted, absorbed into the environment or scattered into the ether. Nokia picks up all the bits and pieces of these waves and uses the collected electromagnetic energy to create electrical current, then uses that to recharge the phone’s battery. A huge range of frequencies can be utilized by the system (there’s no other way, really, as the energy in any given wave is infinitesimal). It’s the same idea that Tesla was exploring 100 years ago, just on a tiny scale.

Mind you, harvesting ambient electromagnetic energy is never going to offer enough electricity to power your whole house or office, but it just might be enough to keep a cell phone alive and kicking. Currently Nokia is able to harvest all of 5 milliwatts from the air; the goal is to increase that to 20 milliwatts in the short term and 50 milliwatts down the line. That wouldn’t be enough to keep the phone alive during an active call, but would be enough to slowly recharge the cell phone battery while it’s in standby mode, theoretically offering infinite power — provided you’re not stuck deep underground where radio waves can’t penetrate.

Nokia says it hopes to commercialize the technology in three to five years.

चिट चोर्न आइपड


अमेरिकामा विद्यार्थीहरुलाई क्याप (टोपी) लगाउन मनाही छ । विद्यार्थीले परीक्षाका बेलामा त्यही क्यापभित्र चिट घुसाएर लैजाने हुनाले बन्द गरिएको त पुरानै घटना भइसक्यो । त्यसपछि मोबाइल फोन पनि लैजान निषेध गरिसकिएको छ । गुरुले ठाने, जाँचका बेला आफ्ना छट्टु विद्यार्थीले एकअर्कालाई टेक्स्ट म्यासेज आदानप्रदान गरेर उत्तर लेख्नेछन् ।

अब गुरुहरुलाई यत्तिले मात्र पुगेको छैन । परीक्षा केन्द्रमा चिट चोर्ने अर्को उपाय विद्यार्थीले फेला पारेका छन् । तिनले प्रविधिको नवीनतम् प्रविधि आइपड र ज्यून्सलाई परीक्षा केन्द्रमा लैजान थालेका छन् । हेर्दा साना आकारका यी दुइ यन्त्रमा भएभरको किताबसमेत अट्ने हुनाले गुरुहरुले यसलाई पनि प्रतिबन्ध लगाउने निधो गरेका हुन् ।

“यी केटाकेटीहरु हामीभन्दा कति अगाडि छन् भने चिट चोर्न नयाँ नयाँ प्रविधिहरु घुसाइरहेका हुन्छन्”, माउन्टेन भ्यू हाइ स्कूलका प्रधानाध्यापक आरोन मेबनले एसोसिएटेड प्रेससँग भने- “उनीहरुले हरेक पटक चिट चोर्नका लागि नयाँ र सिर्जनात्मक बाटाहरु छिटोछिटो पत्ता लगाइरहेका छन् ।” माउन्टेन भ्यू स्कूलले केही समययता जाँचका बेला डिजिटल मिडिया ल्याउन प्रतिबन्ध लगाएका छन् । यो पनि दुइ विद्यार्थीले नयाँ प्रविधिबाट कसरी चिट चोर्न सकिन्छ भनेर छलफल गरिरहेको एक शिक्षकले सुनेपछि यो नयाँ शैलीबारे स्कूल प्रशासनले जानकारी पाएको थियो ।

त्यसो त नेशनल एसोसिएसन अफ सेकेण्डरी स्कूल प्रिन्सिपल्सकी प्रवक्ता साना केम्प भने कति विद्यार्थीहरुले यस्तो सुविधाको दुरुपयोग गरिरहेका छन् भन्ने यकिन तथ्याङ्क फेला नपरिसकेको अवस्थामा यसरी डिजिटल मिडियालाई बन्द नगरिनुपर्ने धारणा राख्छिन् । तर पनि उनले थप्न भुलिनन्- “देशव्यापी रुपमा यस्तो मिडियालाई चोरीका लागि उपयोग हुन थाल्यो भने चाहिँ केही त सोच्नै पर्छ ।”

“आइपडले पढ्नसक्ने ध्वनिका फाइलहरुलाई विद्यार्थीहरुले जाँचमा चोर्न उपयोग गरिरहेका छन्”, १६ वर्षीय माउन्टेन भ्यू स्कूलका विद्यार्थी दमिर बज्दारले बताए । स-साना नोटहरु तिनले आइपडमा टेक्स्ट फाइलमा ‘लिरिक’ नामबाट सेभ गर्ने गरेको, शिक्षकले पढाएका अडियो क्लीपहरुलाई ‘स्कूलहाउस रक’ नामबाट राखिएको उदाहरण पनि उनले दिएका थिए । उनले ती सबै उदाहरणलाई आफ्नो आइपडमा समेत देखाएका थिए । यस्ता फाइल हालै भएको अमेरिकी सरकारी परीक्षामा भरपूर उपभोग भएको समेत उनले बताए ।

१७ वर्षीया केल्सी नेल्सन चाहिँ यस्ता सामग्रीको प्रतिबन्धले आफूलाई दुःखी बनाएको बताएकी छिन् । “सामान्यतया म जाँच सकिएपछि आफ्नो ‘सानो साथी’का गीत सुन्थेँ । यस्तो प्रतिबन्धले हामीजस्ता चिट नचोर्ने र वास्तवमै सङ्गीत रुचाउनेका लागि त ठूलो हानीको कुरा हो”, उनले चित्त दुखाइन् । उनले थपिन्- “मेरो विचारमा यस्तो प्रतिबन्ध त बकवास् नै हो । किनभने चोर्नेहरुले आइपडलाई पनि चोर्ने माध्यम बनाउँछ, आफ्नो जाँघलाई पनि चोर्ने माध्यम बनाउँछ ।”

तर यो समस्या कति गहिरो छ भने वासिङ्टनदेखि क्यालिफोर्निया र सियाटलसम्मका स्कूलमा यस्ता प्रविधिलाई जाँचका बीचमा बन्द नै गर्ने निर्णय भइसकेको छ । यस वर्ष त स्कूलमा मात्र होइन कलेज र युनिभर्सिटीमा समेत यसमाथि प्रतिबन्ध लगाइएका छन् । अमेरिकाबाट यो क्यानडासम्म सरिसकेको छ । विद्युतीय शब्दकोष, सीडी प्लेयर र शब्दजाँचक प्रविधिसमेत प्रतिबन्धित तुल्याइएका छन् ।

सँगसँगै यता उत्तरी क्यारोलिनाको ड्यूक युनिभर्सिटीले चाहिँ विद्यार्थीहरुको क्षमता बढाउन हरेक विद्यार्थीलाई आइपड उपलब्ध गराउने निर्णय गरेको छ । क्याम्पस प्रशासनले यसले उनीहरुको क्षमता अझ बढाउने दाबी गरिरहेको छ । यो प्रयोग सङ्गीत, इञ्जिनीयरिङ र समाजशास्त्रका कक्षाका लागि ज्यादै उपयोगी भइसकेको ड्यूक युनिभर्सिटीका सेन्टर फर एकेडेमिक इन्टिग्रीटीका कार्यकारी निर्देशक टीम टडले बताएका छन् । रोचक त के छ भने विगत १० वर्षयता यस्तो प्रयोग गरिएकोमा परीक्षाका समयमा चोर्ने बानी क्रमशः विद्यार्थीहरुमा घट्दै गइरहेको उनको दाबी छ ।

“यदि तपाइँले विद्यार्थीका मूल्य, मान्यता र आशाहरुको अध्ययन नगरी, तिनमाथि छलफल नचलाई सीधै प्रविधिसँग जुध्छु भन्नु भयो भने यसको अर्थ हुनसक्छ, तपाइँले युद्ध हार्नुहुनेछ,” टेडले भने- “प्रविधिले विद्यार्थीलाई कसरी ध्वंसात्मक बनायो भन्ने बारेमा सोच्नु भन्दा पनि शिक्षकहरुले ती प्रविधिलाई कसरी तिनै विद्यार्थीमा सही उपयोग गर्न सकिन्छ भन्ने तिर सोच्न जरुरी छ । अनि मात्र यो समस्या समाधान हुनसक्छ ।”

प्रविधिको कमाल !


अष्ट्रियाका एक कम्प्युटर व्यवसायीले आफ्नो महङ्गो ल्यापटप चोरी भएपछि चोर पक्राउ गर्न नयाँ तरिका फेला पारे ।

एनानोभा एजेन्सीका अनुसार अष्ट्रियाका ४५ वर्षीय थोमस कारेर पसलमा नभएको मौका पारेर दुइ टीन एजर ठिटाहरुले १ हजार पाउण्ड रकम पर्ने ल्यापटप पसलबाट चोरेर टाप कसे । सौभाग्य कस्तो भने, उनले पसलमा सीसीटीभी चाहिँ राखेका थिए । जसले ती टीन एजर केटाहरुले चोरेको भिडियो रेकर्ड गरेर राखेको रहेछ ।

उनले त्यो भिडियोलाई इन्टरनेटको युट्यूबडटकम (youtube.com) मा पोष्ट गरिदिए । त्यो भिडियो हेर्ने युट्यूबका दर्शकहरुले ती दुइ केटालाई चिनेर कम्प्युटर पसले थोमस कारेरलाई खबर गरे । अनि थोमसले प्रहरीलाई खबर गरेर ती ठिटालाई पक्राउ गरे ।

युट्यूबमा राखिएको भिडियोमा एउटा ठिटो बाहिर मान्छे आउँछन् कि भनेर हेर्ने र अर्को चाहिँ ल्यापटपलाई बोकेर ज्याकेट भित्र घुसाउँदै गरेको दृश्य राखिएको थियो ।

प्रविधिलाई सही सदुपयोग गर्न सकेको खण्डमा माया मारिसकेको चिज पनि फेला पारेपछि अहिले  थोमस कारेर दङ्ग परेका छन् ।

संसारकै तीव्र गतिको क्यामेरा


 संसारकै तीव्र गतिमा फोटो खिच्न सक्ने क्यामेराको विकास वैज्ञानिकहरूले गरेका छन् । यस क्यामेराले मात्र १ सेकेन्डमा ६१ लाख वटा फोटो खिच्न सक्छ । लेजरको प्रयोगबाट यसले तश्वीर खिच्ने बताइएको छ ।

“यो नयाँ किसिमको प्रविधि हो”, क्यालिफोर्निया विश्वविद्यालयका अप्टोइलोक्ट्रोनिक्स विशेषज्ञ केसुके गोडाले भने- “जसले संवेदनशीलता र गतिको आधारभूत सीमिततालाइ समेत चुनौति दिएको छ ।” यसको सटर स्पिड निकै तीव्र रहेको छ, जसले सफा फोटो खिच्न सक्छ ।

 “यो क्यामेरा विशेषतः माइक्रोस्कपीमा निकै काम लाग्छ । कतिपय कम गतिका वस्तुहरूका लागि उच्च रिजोलुशन भएको तश्वीर खिच्नु पर्ने भएकाले यो क्यामेरा निकै उपयोगी हुनेछ”, उनले बताए । स्टिम प्रविधि नाम दिइएको यस क्यामेराले अहिले तत्काललाइ ३ हजार पिक्सेलको क्यामेरा मात्र बन्न सकेको छ ।

जबकि अहिलेको समयमा लाखौँ पिक्सेलका क्यामेरा बजारमा उपलब्ध छन् । तर यति थोरै पिक्सेलको योक्यामेरा कति पो काम लाग्ला र ? तर गोडा र उनको समूहले यसलाइ लाखौँ पिक्सेलको क्यामेरा बनाउन लागिपरेको छ । अहिले नै तयार भएको क्यामेराले १ करोड तश्वीर एक सेकेण्डमा लिन सक्छ । तर सर्वसाधारणका लागि यो निकै महंगो हुने हुनाले व्यवसायिक रूपमा यसको उपयोग हुने कुरामा भने अहिले नै शंकाको घेरामा छ ।

Offsite Backup – It is also extremely important to have at least some form of off-site backup. You could have a dozen backups at your home or office, but something could happen to that location such as a fire, theft, or a natural disaster. They will not do you any good if they are all lost. A simple fix is to keep a copy of your files at both your home and office. Or mail CDs or DVDs of your files to a friend or relative in another location. If something were to happen you would at least have that as a “fail safe”. Also Online Storage is another form of off-site backup.

Online Storage – There are plenty of online options such as xdrive (www.xdrive.com) and box (www.box.net) that range in price from free or start at around $5 a month. You may also use your current web-hosting as another form of backup. Most hosting plans offer at least 5 gigabytes of hosting space. You could create a folder on there called backup and upload all your files there.

Other Alternatives – Most web-based email accounts offer a large amount of storage space that could be used to backup files. Either upload your files there, if that is an option, or simply email yourself an attachment and you have another copy of it online.
